The purpose of the Legislative Branch?
Creates laws, frames public policy.
The purpose of the Executive Branch?
Executes, enforces, and administers the law.
The purpose of the Judicial Branch?
Judges and interprets laws to determine their constitutionality.
What was John Locke’s belief?
He believed that people were born with natural rights. He believed that people had the right to life, liberty, and happiness.
What was Thomas Hobb’s belief?
He believed in divine rule and monarchy. He believed that people needed to give up rights to a ruler.
Describe the Evolutionary Theory.
A theory in which the first governments started with a family, then grew to a clan.
Describe the Forced Theory.
A theory in which people are forced to obey a person or a group of people. A group of people takes over and everyone submits to them.
Describe the Devine Theory.
A theory in which a person is elected because they are believed to have been chosen by God.
Describe the Social Contract Theory.
A theory in which the will of the people work to serve each other.
Define Sovereign
Having the highest amount of authority in decision making.
What are the four characteristics of a State?
Population, Territory, Government, and Sovereignty.
Describe an Oligarchy.
A small group of people that hold power. Usually wealthy, and self-appointed.
Describe a Monarchy.
A member of a royal family is the head of the government.
Describe a Dictatorship.
Government has complete control, and citizens have no say.
Describe a Direct Democracy.
People make decisions and vote. No one votes on behalf of others. Society takes part in law-making decisions.
