The Crimes Flashcards
What is the difference between victim and non-victim precipitated crimes, and which one are Jack’s?
Victim precipitated means the killer knows their victim and it is a personal act of violence
Non-victim precipitated means the killer did not know the victim
Jack the Ripper’s crimes were non-victim precipitated as there is no evidence the victims knew each other and likely did not know Jack either
What is picquerism?
The killer is sexually aroused by the stabbing of someone else
This could’ve been Jack’s motive but there is no other evidence of a sexual motivation besides the stabbing method
What is linkage blindness and quest? What does it mean in this case?
Linkage blindness is the failure of the public to recognize that the same killer is responsible from multiple crimes in different areas and locations
Linkage quest is the tendency to link murders together that are not really connected at all nor are they done by the same individual
In this case, we do not know whether there was one or more killers, whether the victims were all killed by the same person, were killed where they were found, etc.
What is the Modus Operandi of a killer? (4)
The method of operation of a killer, meaning the way he killed them
Jack the Ripper found prostitutes who would take him to a dark area for sex, where he could then brutally kill them
All the areas were commonly used for prostitution (backyards, streets, doss houses, etc.)
The victims were most likely lying on their back when their throats were cut with a knife so no screams were heard and the blood soaked in their clothing or streets instead of spilling onto him
Three women had body parts removed, most were brutally mutilated as the city had never seen before
How did the character of the district help Jack the Ripper?
It was a cesspool of dark and evil-smelling court yards, alleys and yards which were impossible for police to enforce but easy for someone familiar with the area to navigate
