What does the case of Misty Cockerill and Tanya Smith teach us about fear? (6)
These 16 year old girls were attacked in Vancouver one evening in 1995, Tanya was raped, beaten and killed while Misty was beaten badly but managed to escape
The killer kept calling 911 and the police to taunt them and share details of what he did while threatening the town with more violence and death
All of this caused intense fear in the town, people were terrified and there was mass panic with people leaving or taking extreme precautions
His mom eventually turned him in due to DNA, voice and finger print evidence and the killer was a normal man with a normal life
The taunting, contacting police, disappearing into the night, escalating his crimes and the media creating mass panic is all reminiscent to the fear created by Jack the Ripper
Fear is a weapon anyone can use to control society (the government, killers, the media) and to create chaos and panic
What is the McNaughten memorandum? (2)
It was written in response to press reports stating that a man who would stab women in the rear end, Thomas Cutbush, was Jack the Ripper
The senior officer named three suspects: Montague John Druitt (an insane barrister), Aaron Koskinski (a Jewish man) and Michael Ostrog (a Russian immigrant doctor)
