The UKs unwritten constitution has been evolving and adapting since William the conquerer 1066. Although there is written sources-the Acts of parliament- there is no single document that outlines the subjects responsibilities and rights.
This is why amendments and additions are frequently made to Britians law as the constitution is flexible and unwritten.
What are pros and cons of a written constitution?
Pros: clearer and can mean the public have a stronger understanding of what it says, potentially stronger safeguard of constitutional change
Cons: means it is difficult to change and adapt
What are the pros and cons of an unwritten constitution?
A unwritten constitution can lack clarity and mean the public have less awareness of what it says and some say there is more scoop for abuse of power.
The fact is is unwritten and flexible means it is easier to change and adapt
What sources do Britian’s constitution have?
Statute: individual laws or acts of parliament
Common law
Conventions: customs, traditions, long standing
Treaties: historical works of legal/or constitutional authorities
treaties: EU or other international agreements
