The consequences of a sedentary lifestyle Flashcards
Sedentary lifestyle
a lifestyle with irregular or no physical activity
What are the possible consequences of a sedentary lifestyle?
weight gain/obesity
heart disease
hypertension
diabetes
poor sleep
poor self-esteem
lethargy.
Obesity
Obesity is a term used to describe people with a large fat content, caused by an imbalance of calories consumed compared to energy expenditure
BMI over 30
How might obesity affect performance in physical activity? Why?
limits stamina/cardiovascular endurance
limits flexibility
limits agility
limits speed/power
Obesity: Causes ill health (physical)
types of cancer
heart disease/heart attacks
type 2 diabetes
high cholesterol levels
How does obesity increase risk to certain types of cancer?
e.g. colon cancer which has a higher risk due to poor diet, particularly low fibre diets
How does obesity increase the risk of type 2 diabetes?
due to high sugar and carbohydrate consumption
–> untreated type 2 diabetes can lead to damaged blood vessels and problems with kidneys, eyes, gums, feet and nerves
How does obesity increase the risk of heart disease/attacks?
high cholesterol can occur when eating too many fatty foods, this can lead to blockages in blood vessels, such as those around the heart
this leads to an increased risk of developing heart disease(CHD) or heart attacks
Obesity: Causes ill health (mental)
depression
loss of confidence
How can obesity lead to depression and loss of confidence?
possible relating to body image and concerns about how people will perceive them
Obesity: Causes ill health (social)
inability to socialise
inability to leave home
How can obesity lead to the inability to socialise and the ability to leave home?
people with obesity may struggle socialising and meeting new people
they may struggle to leave their home due to a lack of confidence and mobility issues
How does obesity limit cardiovascular endurance?
unable to exercise without stopping repeatedly, due to excess weight and the drop in efficiency of the cardio-respiratory system
How does obesity limit flexibility?
excess fat around the joints restricts movement
How does obesity limit agility?
excess weight makes it harder to change direction quickly
How does obesity limit speed/power?
excess weight makes it harder to move fast
Health risks due to a sedentary lifestyle: obesity/excessive weight gain
due to inactivity and a reduction in metabolic rate
Health risks due to a sedentary lifestyle: poor self-esteem
being overweight or obese can lead to depression
a lack of brain function and release of serotonin
Health risks due to a sedentary lifestyle: hypertension (high blood pressure)
lack of exercise and a poor diet can lead to an inefficient heart and potentially damaged blood vessels
Health risks due to a sedentary lifestyle: poor sleep
lack of oxygen delivery to cells and excessive weight have been linked to snoring and restless legs
this disturbs sleep, as not doing enough exercise to feel tired at night
Health risks due to a sedentary lifestyle: type 2 diabetes
being overweight can increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes
Health risks due to a sedentary lifestyle: heart disease and stroke
high blood pressure and cholesterol increase the risk of a heart attack and a stroke
Health risks due to a sedentary lifestyle: lethargy (lacking energy)
low oxygen levels can lead to a feeling of fatigue and tiredness
