What is the Cochlea?
A bony 3-layered, conical, snail-shaped spiral chamber that extends from the vestibule.
What are the 3 portions of the cochlea?
- Scala vestibuli (superior)
- Scala media (middle)
- Scala tympani (inferior)
Where is the scala vestibuli located? What does it house?
Abuts the oval window.
Contains perilymph.
What does the scala media contain?
Cochlear duct
What is found inside the cochlear duct?
Endolymph.
Spiral Organ of Corti.
What is the Spiral Organ of Corti?
Hearing receptor with hair cells
What are the hair cells within the Organ of Crti called?
Stereocilia
What supports the organ of corti?
The floor of the cochlear duct composed of basilar-membrane.
The roof of the organ of corti is what?
The stiff gel known as the tectorial membrane.
What embedded within the tectorial membrane?
Stereocilia.
How is sensory information is transmitted from the cochlea to the brain?
Via the cochlear branch of CN VIII (Vestibulocochlear)
What sits below the scala media?
The Scala tympani.
Where does the scala tympani terminate? What is it filled with?
At the round window.
Filled with Perilymph.
