What is the Inner Ear?
Bony labyrinth which contains twisting channels which work their way through the temporal bone (petrous region).
Bony labyrinth contains a matching membranous labyrinth.
The Inner Ear bony labyrinth is filled with what?
Perilymph
The membranous labyrinth is filled with what?
Endolymph
The inner ear contains what 3 sections?
- Vestibule
- Semicircular canals
- Cochlea
What is the Vestibule?
The central egg-shaped cavity in the bony labyrinth.
Suspended in the perilymph of the Vestibule are what 2 sacs?
- Utricle - extending to the semicircular canals.
2. Saccule - extends to the cochlea.
What do both the Utricle & Saccule have as an equilibrium receptor?
Maculae
What doe the Maculae do?
Responds to gravity & changes in the position of the head.
**STATIC Equilibrium - make adjustments to keep balanced in a new position.
How is sensory information is transmitted to the brain?
The Vestibular branch of CN VIII (Vestibulocochlear)
