Equilibrium Pathway to the Brain Flashcards
In order to respond reflexively, what is the efferent pathway?
Extrinsic eye muscle control (III, IV, VI)
Accessory nerve and vestibulotract for neck movements (position of the head).
In order to respond to something reflexively and quickly how did the equilibrium impulse travel?
Directly to the reflex centers:
- vestibular nuclei in the brain stem
- cerebellum
**both receive inputs from visual receptors & Proprioceptors
What are 3 types of equilibrium dysfunctions?
- Meniere’s syndrome
- Nystagmus
- BPPV
What is Meniere’s syndrome?
Labyrinth disorder that affects both the cochlea & semicircular canals = vertigo, nausea, vomiting
What is Nystagmus?
The rapid beating if the eyes following rapid & repeated rotatory movements.
*vestibular system thinks you’re still moving
What is BPPV?
Benign Paroxymal Positional Vertigo
Loose otoliths enter the semicircular canal.
