The Circulatory System- The Blood Flashcards
What is the job of the red blood cells?
Carry oxygen from lungs to all cells in body.
Name the four main things blood contains
Red blood cells white blood cells plasma and platelets
How is the red blood cell suited to its role?
Biconcave disk shape- large SA to absorb oxygen
Contain haemoglobin- this contains iron and combines with oxygen in the lungs and releases oxygen in cells.
no nucleus- more room for haemoglobin
What is the job of white blood cells
Defend against disease
How are white blood cells suited to their role?
Change shape- eat microorganisms
Produce antibodies- fight microorganisms
Produce antitoxins- neutralise toxins from microorganisms
What is the job if platelets
Small fragments of cells that help blood clot. Without them you have excessive bleeding or bruising
What is the job of plasma
Yellow fluid that transports everything in blood like red and white blood cells platelets nutrients e.g glucose, carbon dioxide, urea, hormones and antibodies
