B2 Topic 3 Growth & Development Flashcards
How can you measure growth in an organism
Size- measure height length width
Wet mass- we contain lots of water and our weight depends on water retention. This is our mass including water.
Dry mass- mass with no water in body. Only done when dead.
What is growth
An increase in size or mass
Plants and animals grow due to the following processes
Cell differentiation (cell becomes specialised) Cell division (mitosis) Cell elongation (plant cell expands-grow)
What processes do animals grow by?
Cell division as we grow when young and stop when we become adult as cell division no longer for growth but repair. (cell differentiation also lost at young age)
What process do plants grow by?
Cell elongation as plants grow continuously. They differentiate to form new parts and cell division happens in roots shoots only.
