The Chemistry Of Life: Chapter 2 Flashcards
What is the difference between mass and weight?
Mass never changes and weight is how strong mass is being pulled by gravity
List three examples of matter.
cells, organelles, metals, gasses, oils
What are the states of matter?
solid, liquid, gas
What is an Element?
Matter that cant be broken down to other substances by physical or chemical processes.
how many natural occuring elements are there?
92 natural occuring elements
What is known as the smallest unit of matter?
Atoms
What particals soes the nucleus contain?
Protons(positive charged) and Neutrons (neutral)
why does the oribital (eletron Cloud) always have a negative charge?
List the 5 Kingdoms of life
Animals, Fungi, Monera, Protista, plants
What are 4 characteristics of water that are important to life and explain?
- Water is cohesive and adhesive which is essential for water transport within plants,
-Water has a high specific heat capacity which means it can take in a large amount of heat without a big tempature change. This helps regulate tempatures for enviornment and organisms. - water is a solvent (universal solvent)which is essential for transporting nutrients and waste.
-Ice floats. water is less dense as a solid which insulates water and protects marine life in cold tempatures
