Guarantee of rights and freedoms
Section 1; Live as a free citizen in a democratic nation, with certain legal limitations
Fundamental freedoms
Section 2; Follow any religion of choice; Believe what one wants; Express opinions openly without fear; Associate with whomever one chooses; Able to meet with others peacefully
Freedom of conscience and religion; thought, belief, opinion, expression, the press; peaceful assembly; association
Democratic Rights
Section 3-5; Can vote in elections at least once every five years at age 18; Can run as a candidate in elections at age 18
Mobility Rights
Section 6; Able to enter, remain in , or leave Canada; Able to live, work, or study wherever one wishes in Canada
Legal Rights
Section 7-14; Have a right to life, liberty, and security of person; Have the right not to be arbitrarily arrested and detained; Have the right to a fair trial if one is accused of a crime; Have the rights to humane treatment
Equality Rights
Section 15; Able to live, study, and work regardless of race, religion, national or ethnic origin, colour, sex, age, and mental or physical ability; Have the right to be treated as “equal before and under the law”
Official Languages of Canada
Section 16-22; Able to communicate with and receive federal government services in English or French; Able to use French or English in any federal court
Minority Language Educational RIghts
Section 23; Can have children educated in either French or English where sufficient numbers of students exist
Enforcement
Section 24; Able to take hte matter to court should any of the above rights and freedoms be denied
General
Section 25-31; Aboriginal peoples of Canada retain any rights previously established; Charter to be interpreted consistent with the preservation and enhancement of multiculturalism; Rights under the Charter are guaranteed equally to both sexes
