The challenge of natural hazards Flashcards
Social impacts
The effect of an event on the lives of people or community
Natural hazard
Natural event with a social impact
Hazard risk
Probability or chance that a natural hazard may take place
Earthquake
Sudden and violent period of ground shaking caused by movement of rocks within earths crust
Plate margin
The border between two tectonic plates
Volcano
An opening in the earths crust from which lava, ash and gases erupt
Adaption
Actions taken to adjust to natural events such as climate change, to reduce damage, limit the impact, take advantage of opportunities, or cope with the consequences.
Appropriate (or intermediate) technology
Technology suited to the needs, skills, knowledge and wealth of local and their environment
Hot spots
The crust is thin and magma is able to break through to the surface
Constructive (transform)
Where two plates are moving apart
Destructive
Where two plates are moving towards one another
Conservative
Where two plates are sliding alongside each other
Immediate response
Search and rescue and keeping survivors alive by providing medical care, food, water and shelter.
Long term responses
Rebuilding and reconstruction, with the aim of returning people’s lives back to normal and reducing future risk.
