Glacial Weathering Flashcards
1
Q
Frost shattering
A
- Long period of time
- Water fills up a gap in a rock - freezes + expands = rock crack wider and open up
- Repeats
- Crack gets bigger until it shatters into angular fragments = scree
2
Q
Glacial transportation types
A
- Supraglacial Debris
- Englacial debris
- Subglacial debris
3
Q
Supraglacial
A
- Carried on the surface as lateral and medial moraine
- Consists of material that has fallen onto the glacier from the valley sides
4
Q
Englacial
A
- Carried within the body of the glacier
- May have been on the surface = buried by snow/fallen into crevasses
5
Q
Subglacial debris
A
- Moved along the floor of the valley by ice or meltwater streams formed by pressure melting
