Q

Meltwater channels

A
  • Melting of glacial ice forms meltwater streams
    = Deep troughs in landscape
  • Erosive power = wide and deep
  • Retreating glacier = deep meltwater channels are left with very shallow streams running through them.

Q

Kames

A
  • Mounds of fluvioglacial deposits (sand +gravel) found on valley floor
  • Meltwater streams on top of glacier collect in depressions and deposit layers of debris
  • When glacier melts - debris is dumped on valley floor

Q

Kame terraces

A
  • Piles of deposits left against valley wall by meltwater streams
  • Look like lateral moraine - sorted into layers
  • Meltwater streams deposit their heaviest load first and fine sediments on top

Q

Eskers

A
  • Long, winding ridges of sand + gravel
  • Deposited by meltwater - flow in same direction as glacier
  • Deposited by meltwater streams flowing in tunnels under glacier
  • Glacier retreats + stream dries up = load remains an esker
= Show you where the glacial tunnel used to be

Q

Outwash plains/ Sandur

A
  • Layer of gravel, sand and clay = in front of snout
  • Meltwater flows out of glacier + carries sediment
  • Sediment on outwash plains are sorted into layers
  • 1st = Gravel - heaviest = bottom layer
  • Last = Clay - carried furthest from snout
