The Cell Membrane Flashcards
What is the function of the cell membrane?
Allows cell to alter shape and regulates what materials go in and out of cell (controls the environment).
What are the primary components of the cell membrane?
Phospholipids, proteins, cholesterol, carbohydrates
What is Phospholipids function?
It is the primary structure of the cell membrane
What do proteins do in the cell membrane?
Membrane transport, hormone receptors, attaching the membrane to cytoskeleton.
What proteins are on the surface of membrane?
Peripheral pr-
What allows things to get into the cell?
The Transmembrane pr- act as doors
What does Cholesterol do in cell
Membrane?
Keeps cell membrane fluid like and provides stability
What components does cholesterol have?
Hydrophilic, hydrophobic components
What does cholesterol do at low temperatures?
Helps separate the phospholipids so fatty acid chains cant come together and crystallize
What does cholesterol help do in general?
Prevents extremes im consistency in membrane
What carbs are in the cell membrane?
Oligosacchatides
What do carbs do in the cell membrane?
Cell recognition and cell to cell interactions
What does the fluid mosic model state?
The cell membrane has many components and they can flow freely throughout the membrane.
How does the structure of the cell membrane facilitate its function?
Because it serves as a barrier. Only letting necessary molecules through and only letting things out.
What is the difference between peripheral and integral membrane proteins?
Peripheral is found on surface, integral pr pass through membrane.
