Enzymes Flashcards
What are enzymes?
-protein catalysts (guide and control chemical reactions)
What are the three basic characteristics of enzymes?
- increase rate of reaction
- act specifically with one reactant
- can be used over and over
Why do enzymes hahe to be regulated?
Because they are sensitive to their environment conditions and because our body has limited time, resources, and energy so it must respond
What are the two categories of enzyme inhibitors?
Competitive and non competitive
What is a competitive inhibitor?
Binds to active sight of an enzyme and blocks the substrate
What is a non competitive inhibitor?
Binds elsewhere on an enzyme and change the shape of the active sight
What is allosteric regulation?
When enzymes are capable of alternating between an active and inactive shape
What are allosteric sites?
Are receptor sites on an enzyme that may inhibit or stimulate an enzyme’s activity
What are the two types of allosteric regulation?
Allosteric activator and inhibitor
What is an allosteric activator?
Binds to site and stabilizes protein shape and keeps all of the active sites available to substrates
What is a allosteric inhibitor
Stabilizes inactive form of enzymes, binds to site
