The Cell Cycle Flashcards
What is the cell cycle?
As cells grow and divide, they cycle through specific events in a regular pattern; this is referred to as the cell cycle
Interphase
The cell grows and replicates it’s DNA and centrolies
G1 phase
the first part of the
interphase period. It is a period of intense growth when a cell increases in size, and synthesizes new proteins and organelles. Cells within this interphase possess single stranded chromosomes
S phase
(Synthesis phase) is a part of the cell cycle, specifically within interphase, where DNA replication occurs. During this phase, the cell duplicates its genetic material to ensure that both daughter cells receive an identical copy of the DNA.
G2 phase
Phase is the shortest of all. It
is the “preparation for mitosis” phase. Growth continues . The manufacturing of the many organelles and molecules needed for
cell division are completed during this phase
M phase
The (cell division) phase of the cell cycle
occurs after the G2 Phase. It occurs quickly
and involves both mitosis and cytokinesis
G1 check point
makes sure the cell is
adequate size
makes sure nutrients are
available
makes sure DNA is
undamaged
G2 check point
makes sure the cells
chromosomes have been
copied properly
any damage from the
replication process is fixed
here
makes sure mitosis can begin
M checkpoint
occurs in metaphase in
mitosis
the chromosomes must
be properly attached in
order to separate
properly
Cytokinesis in animal cell
the process where the cell membrane pinches in, forming a cleavage furrow that deepens until the cell splits into two identical daughter cells.
Cytokinesis in plant cells
the process where a cell plate forms in the middle of the cell, eventually becoming a new cell wall that separates the two daughter cells.
