The Carbon Cycle Flashcards
1
Q
What happens in the carbon cycle?
A
- CO2 is remove from the environment for photosynthesis
- The carbon from the carbon dioxide is used to make carbohydrates, fats and proteins
- When green plants + algae respire, some of this carbon becomes CO2 and is released into the atmosphere
- When the plants are eaten by animals (and these animals re eaten by animals) some of the carbon becomes part of the fats + proteins that make up their body
- When animals respire, some of this carbon becomes CO2 and is released into the atmosphere
- When plants, algae and animals die, some animals and microorganisms feed on their body
2
Q
What removes the CO2 from the environment and what for?
A
Green plants and algae
For photosynthesis
3
Q
What is produced in the carbon cycle and makes up the body of plants and algae?
A
Carbohydrates
Fats
Proteins
4
Q
What do the microorganisms and detritus feeders do?
A
- Brake down waste product and dead bodies in ecosystems
- Cycled all the materials as plant nutrients
5
Q
After they have done this what happens?
A
All the energy originally absorbed by the green plants and algae will have been transferred
6
Q
What releases CO2 into the atmosphere?
A
Combustion of wood and fossil fuels
