Evolution Flashcards
What does Darwins theory of evolution state?
All species of living things have evolved from simple life forms that first developed over 3 billion years ago
Why was Darwins theory only gradually accepted?
- Challenged church and god
- Insufficient evidence
- Theory of inheritance and variation was unknown until 50 years later
What we’re other theories based on?
The idea that changes occur during a lifetime can be inherited
Who had an alternate theory?
Lamarck
What groups are living organisms classified in?
Animals
Plants
Microorganisms
How do these classifications help?
Help us understand evolutionary and ecological relationships
What do models allow us to do?
Suggest relationships between organisms
What is natural selection?
- Individual organisms within a particular species may show a wide range of variation because of differences in genes
- Individuals with characteristics most suited to the environment are most likely to survive and breed
- The genes which have enabled these individuals to survive are then passed onto their offspring
Where new forms of a gene result from ……….. there may be relatively …… change if the ………….. changes
