The Breathing System Flashcards
Trachea
The windpipe - it leads from the nose to the mouth to the bronchi. It adapts by its function by having rings of cartilage to keep it open.
Bronchus
A tube leading from the trachea to a lung.
Lungs
They contain gas exchange surfaces.
Bronchiole
Smaller tubes leading inside the lungs leading from the bronchus to the alveoli.
Alveoli
Tiny air sacs at the end of bronchioles, where gas exchange happens.
Ribs/ Ribcage
Provides a moveable cage to enclose and protect the lungs.
Muscles/Intercostal muscles
Allow the ribcage to change in volume for ventilation to happen.
Diaphragm
Works with the intercostal muscles to allow ventilation to happen. It contracts to let air in and then relaxes to let air out.
Heart
It interacts with the respiratory system. The whole oxygen transports system works in a cycle. This de-oxygenated blood is pumped back to the heart then on to the lungs.
