The brain Flashcards
What type of cell makes up most brain material?
neurons
What does the Medulla do?
controls automatic responses like heart rate and ventilation.
What does the Cerebellum do?
co-ordination of body movement, walking, balance and posture.
What does the cerebrum/Cerebral Cortex do?
is responsive for voluntary activities, consciousness intelligence memory language, learning speech and senses.
What area of the brain is suggested to be damaged if someone kept falling unconscious?
Cerebral Cortex
What area of the brain is suggested to be damaged if someone can’t remember what he did yesterday?
Cerebral Cortex
What area of the brain is suggested to be damaged if someone has forgotten how to speak?
Cerebral Cortex
What area of the brain is suggested to be damaged if someone keeps falling over?
Cerebellum
What area of the brain is suggested to be damaged if someone has an irregular heartbeat?
Medulla
How can you study the brain?
- studying patients with brain damage
- electrically stimulating the brain
- MRI scan
What can you learn from studying patients with brain damage?
If a small part of the brain has been damaged, the effect this has on the patient can tell you a lot about what tat part of the brain does.
What can you learn from electrically stimulating the brain?
by observing what stimulating different parts of the brain does. we can gain and understanding of what those parts do
What can you learn from MRI scan?
Scientists use it to find out what areas of the brain are active when people are doing things like listening to music or trying to recall memory.
