term test two Flashcards
what is the role of vales in the heart ?
valves regulate blood flow so that blood travels through the heart in one direction and at the right rate
what is osmosis?
a process by which molecules of a solvent tend to pass through a semipermeable membrane from a less concentrated solution into a more concentrated one.
what solution do you use to test for starch?
- iodine solution
- orange-> blue/black
what solution do you use to test for lipids?
- ethanol
- clear-> milky/cloudy
what solution do you use to test for protein?
- Bivret solution
- -turnes purple
what solution do you use to test for glucose?
- Benedict’s reagent
- blue-> orange/red
what enzyme breaks down starch? products?
- amylase
- sugars
what enzyme breaks down proteins? products?
- protease
- amino acids
what enzyme breaks down lipids? products?
- lipase
- glycerol
What do emulsifiers do?
they allow you to mix fats with water-based substances. doesn’t usually work e.g. oil and water don’t mix
name an emulsifier?
bile
how can enzymes be used out side of the body?
in baby food - protease
in lactose free foods -lipase
what are some properties of of arteries?
- thick-hight pressure
- elastic and muscular walls
- small lumen size
- has few small valves
- direction is away from the heart
What are some properties of veins?
- elastic and muscular walls
- large lumen size
- has valves
- direction is towards the heart
What are some properties of Capillaries?
- thin walls -substances can pass through
- have microscopic lumen
- has no direction
