Biology index Flashcards
Organelles
Structures that have specific functions in a cell. The nucleus, mitochondria, and, chloroplasts are organelles.
pathogenic
Of a bacterium virus or other microorganism causing disease.
Protist
A single-celled organism of the kingdom Protista, such as a protozoan or simple alga.
Archeae
Microorganisms which are similar in size and structure to bacteria but are genetically different.
Mitosis
Is a process of nuclear division in Eucaryotic cells. Mitosis refers specifically to the separation of the duplicated genetic material carried in the nucleus.
Sheaths
are the fatty tissue that protects your nerve cells.
Sub-cellular
Structures smaller than a cell that are found within it.
Cellulose
A carbohydrate. It forms the cell wall in plant cells.
Turgid
Enlarged and swollen with water
Flaccid
Lacking turgor. Laking stiffness or strength. Soft and floppy.
Plasmolysis
Is the process where a cell’s contents shrink away from the cell wall.
Distilled
Having been purified by undergoing heating and condensation.
Blood plasma
The liquid part of the blood containing useful things like glucose, amino acids, minerals, vitamins and, many other things.
Tissue fluid
The fluid which is delivered from blood plasma that passes through the walls of capillaries.
Passive transport
Transport of molecules that occurs as a result of a net movement from a higher to a lower concentration. This requires no energy.
