The Brain Flashcards
What are the structures of the forebrain
Hypothalamus, thalamus and cerebrum
What are structures of the midbrain
Reticular formation
What are structures in the hindbrain
Cerebellum, medulla, pons
What is the hypothalamus’ function
Regulation of body temp, sex drive, appetite and sleep/ wake cycle
What is the thalamus’ function
All sensory info passes through then gets redirected to appropriate sensory area
What is the cerebrum’s function
Conscious actions. Responsible for higher cognitive functions, voluntary movement, emotions and personality
What is the reticular formations function
Network of neurons that modulate incoming sensory stimuli and redirects to the cerebral cortex. Arousal and alertness
What is the cerebellums function
Voluntary movement and balance
What is the medullas function
Regulates internal body systems. Necessary for survival. Eg heart rate and breathing
What is the pons function
Arousal, sleep/waking, breathing, coordination of some muscle movements and motor tone
What are the lobes
Parietal, temporal, frontal, occipital
What is the parietal lobes function
Process bodily sensations, spatial awareness. Receive and integrate info from other structures
Damage to the parietal lobe?
Loss of sensation and difficulty navigating space
Frontal loves function?
Integrate info received from other structures, gives meaning to it to determine an appropriate response
Temporal lobes function
Registers/processes sound based info. Memory.
