Brain Plasticity/ Injury Flashcards
Neuroplasticity
The brains ability to change its structure and function as a result of internal or external stimuli. Occurs through the lifespan
Adaptive plasticity
When the brain alters connected between synapses and reorganises neural pathways as a result of learning or following injury
Developmental plasticity
The changes in brain neurons and synaptic connections that occur as a result of experience during specific developmental stages
What is sprouting
Occurs when new connections between neurons are created
What is rerouting
When an undamaged neuron that has lost connection with a damaged neuron can make new connections with other active neurons
What is an ABI
Acquired brain injury. A brain injury acquired after birth
What is a TBI
Traumatic brain injury. Caused by an external force
Example of a TBI
A blow to the head
What is an NTBI
Non traumatic brain injury, caused by internal factors
What is an example of an NTBI
Lack of oxygen
What can damage to the right parietal lobe cause
Spatial neglect
What can damage to the left hemisphere cause
Impaired language ability (aphasia)
