The Body’s Cavities, Planes, Sections and Areas Flashcards
What are the two major cavities of the body?
The dorsal cavity and the Ventral cavity

What cavities does the dorsal cavity include?
The cranial cavity and the spinal cavity
What organs are in the cranial cavity?
The skull and the brain
What organs are in the spinal cavity?
The spine and the spinal cord
What membranes line the dorsal cavity systems?
Membranes called meninges
What are the two cavities that make up the ventral cavity?
The thoracic cavity and the abdominal cavity
What organ divides the thoracic and abdominal cavities?
The diaphragm
What cavity is located in the abdominal cavity?
The pelvic cavity
What are the organs in the thoracic cavity?
The heart and the lungs
What membranes are the organs of the thoracic cavity covered in?
They are covered in pleural membranes
What type of pleural membranes cover the chest?
The parietal membranes
What type of pleural membranes cover the lungs?
The visceral pleural membranes
What type of pleural membranes cover the heart?
The pericardial pleural membranes
Inside the heart, what two pleural membranes are available and what are they called?
Within the heart are both parietal and visceral membranes and they are called serous membranes
What does serous membranes mean?
It means they cover organs
What organs are located in the abdominal cavity?
The liver, the stomach and the intestines
What are the two types of serous membranes in the abdominal cavity?
Peritoneum and mesentery
Which type of serous membranes line the abdominal cavity?
The peritoneum
What are the outer surfaces of the organs located in the abdominal cavity covered by?
Mesentery membranes
Where is the pelvic cavity located?
Below the abdominal cavity
What pleural membrane is located in the abdominal cavity?
The peritoneum, it covers some of the surfaces of the pelvic organs
What organs are located in the pelvic cavity?
Reproductive organs and urinary organs
