The Blood Flashcards
Blood
Fluid connective tissue
Connects vital organs and transports vital gases and nutrients to body tissues while removing waste
Function of the blood (7)
- Transport of nutrients, gases and waste products.
- Transport of processed molecules.
- Regulatory molecules such as hormones.
- Maintains thermoregulation of the body.
- Protection against foreign materials (antibodies)
- Regulation of pH (buffer system) and osmosis (equilibrium)
- Clotting cascade formation.
Clotting Cascade
Protective component to prevent excess blood loss.
Blood Components
plasma
red blood cells
white blood cells
platelets
Plasma Proteins
Albumin, Globulin, Fibrinogen and Prothrombin
osmotic pressure
Plasma is also responsible for maintaining the osmotic pressure within the blood. (If plasma proteins fall, osmotic pressure is reduced and fluid shifts into the tissues in the body cavity causing oedema.)
Plasma Contents
Water Plasma Protein Electrolytes Nutrients Waste Products Hormones Gases
Red Blood Cells
Erythrocytes
Biconcave shape
Small and Flexible
No nucleus
Large surface area
function- to deliver oxygen around the body from the lungs and return carbon dioxide to the lungs
Life span of a red blood cell
produced in red blood cell
regulated by erythropoietin hormone
100-120 day life span
destroyed by macrophages in the spleen liver and bone marrow
White blood cell function
protect the body from invading microbes
Platelets
important in preventing blood loss by forming thromboses
small disc shaped fragments
produced in the bone marrow
production regulated by thrombopoietin
stored in the slpeen.
