Homeostasis Flashcards
What is the definition of homeostasis
The tight regulation of the bodies internal environment
Physiological variables affecting homeostasis.
- Temperature
- Water balance (intake v output)
- Electrolyte balance ( Na, K, Ca, Mg, balance)
- Blood glucose levels
- Blood and tissue oxygen and carbon dioxide levels
- Blood pressure regulation
Homeostasis is controlled by…..
control systems which detect and respond to change within the internal environment.
What are the 3 components of control systems?
- Detector (sensor)
- Control centre
- Effector
What is the role of the detector within control systems?
Monitors the value of some variable.
What is the role of the control centre within control systems?
Establishes the set point required for the certain variable.
What is the role of the effector within control systems?
Can change the value of the variable.
Define positive feedback loops
A change in a given direction causes additional change in the same direction.
Define negative feedback loops
A change in given direction causes change in the opposite direction.
When does homeostatic imbalance occur?
If a rapid change occurs, body responses may not be able to adapt in a timely manner and the system may shift outside normal physiological range.
