Function of the Cardiovascular System
- Heart acts as a muscular pump to ensure adequate blood flow throughout the body.
- Transport of oxygen, nutrients and hormones to body cells through the blood.
- Removal of metabolic waste from cells.
- Protection of the body by circulating defensive white blood cells and antibodies from foreign materials.
Heart Position
The heart is located between the lungs, slightly more to the left of the chest.
It lies obliquely within the thoracic cavity.
- Posterior to the sternum
- Superior to the diaphragm.
What is the inferior tip of the heart called?

What is the name of the continuous layer of tissue that surrounds the whole heart?
