The Big Bang Theory Flashcards
For electromagnetic waves as the wavelength decreases what happens to the frequency?
Frequency increases
What is the energy of radiation proportional to?
It’s frequency
How does the temperature of a star affect its wavelength?
The hotter a star the smaller it’s peak wavelength
What are 3 points that are evidence towards the Big Bang theory?
- Cosmological redshift
- Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation (CMBR)
- The amount of hydrogen and helium in the Universe
Which type of star has a higher temperature: red giants or blue dwarfs
Blue dwarfs
What can we conclude by Hubbles law?
The universe is expanding as all galaxies are moving away from us with related speed and distance
How can you estimate the mass of a galaxy?
By measuring the orbital speed of the stars around the galactic centre
What is dark matter?
A type of matter proposed to account for the missing mass of the universe and that cannot be seen by conventional telescopes
Why do scientists believe dark matter exists?
As the total mass of visible objects in the universe is less that the estimated mass of the universe many believe there is matter we cannot observe - dark matter
What is dark energy?
A type of energy proposed to account for the missing energy in the universe; this is to account for the fact that the rate of expansion of the universe is increasing
What is peak wavelength?
The wavelength in a stars spectrum that has the highest irradiance
When the temperature of a star increases how does this affect the radiation per square meter that is emitted?
The radiation per square meter increases with the temperature
What determines the rate at which a galaxy rotates?
Dark matter
What does the rate of rotation of celestial objects depend on?
The magnitude of the masses involved
The greater the speed of rotation the greater the mass.
What does the wavelength of the peak intensity indicate?
The temperature of the star
