Projections and Satellites Flashcards
How do you calculate the initial vertical velocity of a projectile?
Vv= v sin θ
How do you calculate the horizontal velocity of a projectile?
V h = v cos θ
What do you use along with vertical velocity to calculate what is being asked for in a projectiles question?
suvat
What is horizontal velocity used to determine in a projectiles question?
The distance the projectile traveled using the time it’s in the air
If 2 objects are projected horizontally at different speeds will the one with greater horizontal speed reach the ground first?
No they will hit the ground at the same time
What effect does the mass of a projectile have on its motion?
No effect
What is a projectiles velocity at its maximum height?
0
Why is it significant when a projectile travelling at 45° to the vertical?
Because horizontal and vertical components of velocity will be equal
Low orbit satellites travel faster/slower than high orbit satellites
Faster
What does free fall mean?
When weight is the only force acting on a body
What is a projectile?
An object whose motion is affected by a gravitational field
What does it mean when air resistance is negligible in terms of a projectile?
There is no acceleration in the horizontal direction as there is no unbalanced force
What is the acceleration in the vertical motion when doing projectile calculations?
9.8 ms-2 (due to gravity)
What is a satellite?
An object that is in an orbit around another, usually a planet
Why do satellites follow a curved path?
Because they are projectiles satellites have a constant horizontal speed but accelerate vertically. The curvature of the planet matches the curvature of their path as they fall towards a planet so they remain the same height above a planet.
