Electric Fields Flashcards
What is an electric field?
The region of space around a charge
What do the field lines indicate in an electric field diagram represent?
The direction and magnitude of the force a positive charge would experience.
What would a positive charge experience if placed in the electric field of a positive charge?
Repulsion (the force acting in it would move it outwards)
What would a positive charge experience if placed in the electric field of a negative charge?
Attraction (the force acting on it would move it towards the charge)
What does the spacing of electric field lines show?
The closer together the lines the greater the force (the electric field strength in this area is stronger)
Where do electric fields exist?
Around any object that is charged
What is electrical potential?
The amount of energy required to move a charge of one coulomb to a point within the field.
What is Q?
Charge (C)
What is a magnetic field?
The area of space around a magnet
______ hand rule
Left
What does the right hand grip rule represent?
Thumb - direction of current
Direction your fingers curl - the direction of magnetic field lines
What do you need to remember about the hand rules?
Right hand grip rule you can do whilst still holding your pen
Left hand rule you need to spread your fingers
YOU NEVER NEED TO PUT YOUR PEN DOWN!!
What does each finger represent in the left hand rule?
Thumb - Thrust of force
First - magnetic Field
C (S)econd - Current
What is a particle accelerator?
A device that uses electric and magnetic fields to accelerate particles to very high speeds very quickly.
How does an unbalanced force affect a charge particle?
Causes it to accelerate (usually very quickly)
