The Berlin Airlift Flashcards
What made Stalin cut off all land communication between the western powers section in Berlin and their zones in the rest of Germany?
By 1948 Britain and France agreed to merge their zones in Germany. This new enlarged Germany frightened Stalin, as he thought the attempts to rebuild Germany were really a subtle attempt to attack Russian security.
Thus, he blockaded West Berlin in order to starve out its inhabitants.
How did America, Britain and France respond to the Berlin blockade?
Determined to stay in Berlin and prevent communist expansion, they organised a massive airlift to fly essential supplies to the 2.5 million inhabitants of West Berlin.
How long did the blockade last?
324 days.
