Life For Workers Flashcards

Q

What were some economical issues in Germany?

A

Unemployment- this had risen to over 6 million by 1932

Inflation and hyperinflation- Germany faced devastating hyperinflation in 1923, when $1 = 4,200,000,000 marks.

Germany relied on overseas trade for vital raw materials and food supplies. Part of the reason Germany had lost the Great War was because it hadn’t been able to maintain these supplies.

Q

What is RAD?

A

National (Reich) Labour service.

Hitler announced this as a means of employment for unemployed men. From 1935 all men aged between 19-25 had to work for the government for 6 months. Later women were included in the scheme.

They were mostly employed in construction jobs, e.g. schools, hospitals, autobahns and also in farming. Women were given teaching and domestic service jobs.

The men lived in camps and given army like uniforms. They received free meals and pocket money instead of wages.

Q

What were the impacts of Nazi actions on the lives of German workers?

A

Although they tied to improve the life of workers, the workers lacked basic freedoms. With the banning of trade unions and strikes made illegal, they had no way to challenge their working conditions.

The DAF increased the number of hours from 60 to 72 per week.

The average factory worker earned 10 times more than those on dole money.

17
Q

Were people better off?

A

Small businessmen
Reduced competition allowed for small shopkeepers and businessmen to have more success.

Bib businessmen.
Traditional supporters of Nazis, they benefited from rearmament contracts and slave labour. They were forced to produce what the Nazis wanted.

Farmers.
Benefited from new land, though there was a lot of government meddling and loss of farm workers.

Older people
Got large pensions and loved the return of the “glory days”

Unskilled workers
They were put to work on DAF programmes. Although wages were low and they were forced, this allowed them to get back on the employment ladder.
