The back of the neck (dave's notes) Flashcards
Describe the back of the neck.
Muscles connecting the skull to the spine and pectoral girdle
What is the ligamentum nuchae>
A midlline IMS????
What are the components of the suboccipital triangle?
Rectus capits posterior major, inferior oblique, superior oblique, rectus capitis posterior minor
Which part of the vertebral artery ascends through the back of the neck?
The second part
How does the second part of the vertebral artery ascend through the neck?
Through the foramina of the upper six cervical vertebrae (anterior to the emerging nerves - a spinal nerve to each space)
The vertebral artery passes vertically from C6-C2 then passes laterally. Why?
To allow for some slack, then passes to C1
After reaching C1, where does the vertebral artery travel?
Passes medially behind the atlantocciptal joint and lies on the floor of the sup occipital triangle, grooves the posterior arch of the atlas, and then enters the skull
Via what does the vertebral artery enter the skull?
The foramen magnum
Where do the vertebral veins run?
Exist only in the neck, not the skull. Run alongside the arteries and join the brachiocephalic vein in the root of the neck on the lung apex
What lies between artery and bone on the posterior arch of the atlas?
The suboccipital nerve
From what does the greater occipital nerve arise? What does it supply?
Arises from the posterior ramus of C2, supplies the skin of the scalp up to the vertex
Occipital artery
so there
Where is the suboccipital nerve found?
Between the artery and bone on the posterior branch of atlas.
