Suprahyoid region - submandibular fossa and submandibular gland (dave's notes) Flashcards
What are the limits of the submandibular fossa?
The submandibular fossa is deep to the investing fascia and the inferior border of the mandible, extending to mylohyoid muscle
What is infection in the submandibular fossa called?
Ludwig’s angina
Describe the submandibular gland
A mixed mucous and serous gland with a large superficial part and a small deep part
Where is the superficial part of the submandibular gland found?
The superficial part fills the space between the mandible, mylohyoid and investing layer
What are they three surfaces of the submandibular gland?
Lateral, inferior and medial
What does the lateral surface of the submandibular gland lie against?
The submandibular fossa, overlapping the medial peterygoid. It is deeply grooved posteriorly by the facial artery
What does the inferior surface of the submandibular gland lie against?
Skin, platysma, and investing fascia crossed by the facial vein and cervical branch of the facial nerve
What does the medial surface of the submandibular gland lie against?
They mylohyoid and its vessels, posteriorly overlapping the hypoglossal nerve and deep lingual vein
Where are the submandibular lymph nodes found?
On and within the gland
What are the limits of the deep part of the submandibular gland?
The deep part extends forwards between mylohyoid and hypoglossal, with lingual nerve above, duct and hypoglossal nerve below.
How long is the submandibular duct? Where does it run from/to?
5cm.
Emerges from the superficial part near the posterior border and runs between myelohyoid and hypoglossal, then between the sublingual gland and geniohyoid to open in the floor of the mouth.
What is the blood supply ad venous drainage of the submandibular gland?
The facial artery. Venous drainage to the facial vein.
Where does sumbandibular lymph drain to?
The submandibular lymph nodes
What is the nerve supply to the submandibular gland?
Secretomotor from the submandibular ganglion (parasympathetic).
Preganglionic fibres pass from the SSN (pons) ??? via the nervous intermedius, chorda tympani, and lingual nerve
Sympathetic (vasoconstrictor) come from the facial artery plexus.
Describe the development of the submandibular gland
Develops from a groove in the floor of the mouth whose blind end proliferates (ectodermal)
