The Autonomic Nervous System Flashcards
Motor subdivision of the peripheral nervous system that functions without awareness or attention. Innervates cardiac muscle, smooth muscle, and glands. Uses two-neuron chains to reach its effectors.
Autonomic Nervous System
The cell body of the first neuron in an ANS chain. Resides in the brain stem or spinal cord.
Preganglionic Neuron
A thin, lightly myelinated fiber. Synapses with the second neuron.
Preganglionic Axon
The second motor neuron of an ANS chain.
Postganglionic Neuron
A thin, nonmyelinated fiber. Synapses with an effector organ.
Postganglionic Axon
Neurotransmitter released by autonomic postganglionic parasympathetic fibers.
Acetylcholine
Neurotransmitter released by autonomic postganglionic sympathetic fibers.
Norepinephrine
