Brain Injuries and Brain Disorders Flashcards
An alteration in brain function, usually temporary, following a blow to the head.
Concussion
A more serious concussion that can bruise the brain and cause permanent neurological damage.
Contusion
Bleeding from ruptured vessels into the subdural or subarachnoid spaces.
Subdural or Subarachnoid Hemorrhage
Swelling of the brain.
Cerebral Edema
Occurs when blood circulation to a blocked and brain tissue dies. Also called a stroke. Can be cause by a blood clot or by hemorrhage that compresses brain tissue.
Cerebrovascular Accident
A reduction of blood supply to brain tissue that impairs the delivery of oxygen and nutrients.
Ischemia
Temporary episodes of reversible cerebral ischemia.
Transient Ischemic Attacks
A progressive degenerative disease of the brain that results in dementia.
Alzheimer’s Disease
Mental deterioration.
Dementia
Results from degeneration of the dopamine-releasing neurons of the substantia nigra. Afflicted individuals have a persistent tremor at rest.
Parkinson’s Disease
A hereditary disorder where mutant huntingtin protein accumulates in brain cells and causes tissue to die, leading to massive degeneration of the basal nuclei and cerebral cortex.
