Taste and Olfaction Flashcards
Respond to chemicals in an aqueous solution.
Chemoreceptors
The organ of smell. Patch of pseudostratified epithelium located in the nasal cavity.
Olfactory Epithelium
Bowling-pin shaped receptor cells that cover the olfactory epithelium.
Olfactory Sensory Neurons
Cushion and support the olfactory sensory neurons.
Supporting Cells
Located at the base of the epithelium. Differentiate to replace olfactory sensory neurons.
Olfactory Stem Cells
Increase the receptive surface area. Covered by a coat of thin mucus produced by the supporting cells and olfactory glands.
Olfactory Cilia
Formed by collective of nonmyelinated axons of the olfactory sensory neurons. Project superiorly through the openings in the cribriform plate of the ethmoid bone.
Filaments of the olfactory nerve
Synapse with the filaments of the olfactory nerve. The distal ends of the olfactory tracts.
Olfactory Bulbs
Second-order sensory neurons in glomeruli.
Mitral Cells
Converging location of axons from neurons bearing the same kind of receptor. Represents a singly aspect of an odor.
Glomeruli
Tracts that connect the olfactory bulbs to the piriform lobe of the olfactory cortex.
Olfactory Tracts
The sensory organs for taste.
Taste Buds
Peg-like projections of the tongue mucosa that make the tongue surface slightly abrasive.
Papillae
Mushroom-shaped papillae that cover the entire tongue surface. Only have one to five taste buds each.
Fungiform Papillae
The largest and least numerous papillae. Have many taste buds.
Vallate Papillae
Located laterally on the tongue.
Foliate Papillae
Receptor cells for taste.
Gustatory Epithelia Cells
Project from the tips of all gustatory epithelial cells and extend through a taste pore to the surface of the epithelium. The sensitive portions of the gustatory epithelial cells.
Gustatory Hairs
Pores where gustatory hairs project from.
Taste Pore
Stem cells that divided and differentiate into new gustatory epithelia cells.
Basal Epithelia Cells
Transmits taste impulses from the anterior two-thirds of the tongue.
Facial Nerve (VII)
Transmits taste impulses from the posterior third of the tongue and pharynx.
Glossopharyngeal Nerve (IX)
Transmits taste impulses from the epiglottis and lower pharynx.
Vagus Nerve (X)
Location where afferent taste fibers synapse in the medulla.
Solitary Nucleus
