Give a definition of atonement
God’s act of dealing with the primary human problem, sin.
God accomplished the way of restoration through Christ’s death.
Where did the plan of the atonement originate?
In the mind of God before the creation of the world.
What attributes of God moved Him to provide for the atonement?
Holiness- He is perfect and therefore wants to bring his creation back into perfection.
Love - God is the lover of humanity and will go to extremes to show love.
What aspects of man’s condition made the atonement necessary?
Man is incapable of saving themselves due to its depravity.
How could God justly put man’s sin upon an innocent victim?
God is just in all that he does, and Jesus lays his life down willingly. - John 10:18
What qualified Christ for being such an offering?
He lived the life that Adam was meant to and died an underserving death. - Romans 5:12-21
Could anyone other than Christ have made an acceptable offering?
No, all of humanity is gained with sin. - Romans 3:23
Jesus was not born of a human father, therefore he did not have original sin.
What assurance do we have that the offering was acceptable to God?
Because it was God himself that presented Christ as the sacrifice. - Romans 3:25
And through Christ’s resurrection. - Romans 6:2-14
Is there any limitation concerning who may benefit from the atonement of Christ?
No, John 3:16
Can the atonement in any way be effective in human lives where the gospel is unknown?
Yes, because God is at work even where the human works are not and can be seen and sought out through his creation. - Romans 1:18-19
