Holy Scriptures Flashcards
What is Revelation?
The process by which God discloses divine nature, will, and purpose to humans and the corpus of truth.
There are two kinds of Revelation:
General Revelation: which is God’s revealing of himself through his creation
Psalm 19:1
The heavens declare the glory of God and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.
Special Revelation: God’s revealing himself through the Bible
2 Peter 1:20-21
Knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation. For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
What is Illumination
The ongoing work of the Holy Spirit to assist believers to interpret, understand, and obey the Scriptures.
Psalm 119:130
The unfolding of your words gives light, it imparts understanding to the simple.
Inspiration
Definition:
The Work of the Holy Spirit in enabling the human authors of the Bible to record what God desired to have written in the Scriptures.
2 Timothy 3:16
All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable far teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for teaching in righteousness.
Explain the relationship between the Word of God and Scripture.
The Word of God is first the self-revelation of God through Jesus Christ (John 1:1)
The Word of God is also God’s breathed written word, the Scriptures or Holy Bible (2 Timothy 3:16)
Both reveal God to humanity
Through Jesus, the Word, all things were created and are sustained.
Through the Scriptures, God gives us an objective source to live and learn by.
What is your opinion of extra-biblical revelation?
All we need to know of God is contained within his written Word, the Bible.
If someone has extra-biblical revelation it must be tested against the Bible.
If it is in agreement we may embrace it.
If it is in opposition we must reject it.
1 John 4:1a Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God.
How do revelation and divine guidance relate?
Revelation gives us a plum line or objective standard by which to both interpret and test God’s divine guidance.
What is your position and understanding of scriptural inerrancy?
Scripture is errant in that it is accurate in everything it teaches on all subjects that are contained within the Bible.
Matthew 5:18-19
For truly, I say to you until heaven and earth pass away, not one iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplish. Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches other to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does, them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
Canon
Literally means “standard”or “rule”…the term is associated with the collection of books that the Church has recognized as the written Word of God. It is the standard and rule of faith. The Bible is also authoritative and contains everything we need to know of God.
What is your understanding of the criteria used for deterring which books were included/excluded in the canon?
3 Main Criteria which are…
1) Authorship: An Apostle or someone associated with them write it.
2) Witness of the Spirit: It aligns with other Scripture like Old Testament. 3) Acceptance Among Believers: The Church had agreed upon it.
How would you respond to the charge that the doctrine of the Scripture is irrelevant since, “all we possess are very faulty copies and translations of the original documents of biblical authors?”
First we have over 24 thousand manuscripts that have been found throughout the ages. With some dating to second and even the first century.
Whereas when talking about other promenade historical people such as Plato and Aristotle we only have a few hundred.
Second, application of God’s Word, such as the Proverbs, shows that the Bible is accurate.
How necessary is Scripture to correct Church practice and doctrine?
Since there is not other rule (Matthew 5:18-19) and Jesus gives clear directions on the subject of doctrine and discipline (Matthew 5:18-19; 18:15-17) it is central to both.
Explain how Scripture is relevant to the average person in your church.
Since it is the only rule, our objective standard, and God’s words to us (Matthew 5:18-19; 2 Timothy 3:16) we must press upon our church members that without Scripture we cannot hope to understand nor rightly follow God.
