2
Q

Aristotle

A

rejected the concept- he said that matter was continuous and there were only four elements (earth, air fire, & water)

Q

John Dalton

A

Dalton’s Atomic Theory

  1. All matter is made up of atoms
  2. Atoms are indestructible and cannot be divided into smaller particles (atoms are indivisible)
  3. All atoms of one element are exactly alike, but they are different from atoms of other elements.

-the theory explains “the law of conservational mass”

Q

Joseph Proust

A

developed a theory that atoms have fixed masses, “law of definite proportions”
% by mass = (mass of element/mass of compound) x 100

9
Q

Alpha particles (α)

A

helium nucleus +2 charge, 4amu mass
when an element emits an alpha particle, it loses 4 particles and drops down 2 elements (Radium-Raidan)
Ex: Radon-222

Q

Beta particles (β)

A

high speed electron emitted from the nucleus (the neutron splits, the electron is lighter so it speeds away and leaves more protons, changes mass) -1 charge, 1/1840thamu mass
Ex: I-131

16
Q

3 ways to find radioactivity

A

radio badges, scintillation counter, Geiger counter

17
Q

Eugen Goldstein

A

(1884) German Jew, discovered proton, no one listened due to anti-Semitism, he couldn’t think outside of the box

18
Q

Frederick Soddy

A

Nobel prize in chemistry

what else did he do???

19
Q

Hans Geiger

A

creates the Geiger counter used to count radio activity, every time a radioactive ray contacts Ar gas, it pops off an electron

20
Q

James Chadwick

A

British, 1932 discovered the neutron

21
Q

Niels Bohr

A

developed first successful model of the atom, said that energy must given out when excited electrons fall from a high energy level to a low one- the Bohr (Planetary) Model

  • H’s single electron could orbit at only specific distances from the atom’s nucleus
  • when the electron is in the orbit closest to the nucleus, it has the lowest energy (like falling down stairs)
  • the level of energy increases as the electron orbital level increases
  • the energy of an electron is “quantized”
22
Q

Albert Einstein

A

Jewish!

23
Q

Werner Heisenberg

A

Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle???

24
Q

Louis DeBrogle

A

???

25
Q

Erwin Schroedinger

A

developed the electron cloud model in 1926, the quantum mechanical model?
???? cat??? math person

26
Q

What is a neutron composed of?

A

A proton and an electron fused together.

27
Q

What do you always follow in chemistry?

A

THE ELECTRON!

28
Q

“Protons are huge, electrons are tiny”

A

“Protons are huge, electrons are tiny”

29
Q

Antoine Becquerel

A

Discovered “radio activity”
Using film and phosphorescence- realized that the rock (Pitchblend, U3O8) is emitting rays → Uranic rays since there is Uranium

30
Q

Marie Curie

A

-escaped from Poland
-Bocquerel’s grad student after she moved to France
2 Nobel prizes (physics-radio activity & chemistry- discovers and names Po, Ra)
-the mass doesn’t change the longer it keeps radiating- undergoing transmutation

  • dies of Leukemia from radiation exposure
  • her notes are also radioactive and they are kept in France
31
Q

Planck’s Constant

A

E=hν (6.626x10-34J*S)

32
Q

James Clerk Maxwell

A

“Father of modern physics”

discovered that a changing magnetic field will induce a changing electric field, a wave can’t exist unless it is moving, created theory of electromagnetism

33
Q

Ludwig Boltzman

A

physicist & philosopher, statistical mechanics, harshly criticized

What did he do?????
