The Atmosphere Flashcards
What is the main source f heat from the earth?
The sun
What percentage of the air is nitrogen?
78%
What percentage of the earth is oxygen?
21%
What are the different layers of the earth?
Troposphere
Stratosphere
During our summers (northern hemisphere) which way is the sun facing?
Towards the sun
What are doldrums?
An area of calm weather
What are trade winds?
The air movements towards the equator
What are two warm currents?
North Atlantic drift
Gulf Stream
What are two cold currents?
Labrador
Canary
What are two hot air masses over Ireland?
Tropical continental
Tropical maritime
What are three cold air masses over Ireland?
Polar continental
Artic
Polar maritime
What are isobars?
Lines on a weather chart that show places of equal atmospheric pressure
What are isohyets?
Lines on a weather map joining places of equal rainfall
What are isotherms?
Lines on a weather map joining places of equal temperature together
How are warm fronts represented on a weather chart?
Red lines with red semi circles
What is a cold front on a weather chart?
Blue lines with blue triangles
What is an occluded front?
Warm and cold front together
What are anticyclones and how are they represented?
Showing areas of high pressure denoted with a H
What are depressions and how are they denoted?
Areas of low pressure that are donated by a L
How is atmospheric pressure measured?
With a barograph
How is humidity measured?
With a hydrometer
What is a Stevenson screen used for?
To measure atmospheric pressure and temperature
What piece of equipment measures wind speed?
Anemeter
What piece of equipment measures wind direction?
Wind vane
How is sunshine measured?
With a Campbell stokes recorder
What are the three types of clouds?
- Stratus
- Cumulous
- Cirus
What are stratus clouds?
Look like flat sheets and indicate a rainy day
What are cumulus clouds?
Look like fluffy balls of cotton indicate good weather
What are cirrus clouds?
Wispy curls
What is conventional rain?
The ground is heated and cools and condensed into clouds
What s cyclonic or frontal rain?
A cold front and warm front come together, the warm air is less dense than the cold air so it rises. It cools ams condenses into clouds.
What is relief rain?
When prevailing winds pick up moisture when it travels across the sea. When the wind reaches the coast it is forced upwards into clouds. As the wind continues to go over the mountain it drops its moisture as relief rain
What are the four stages of the water cycle?
- Evaporation
- Condensation
- Precipitation
- Run off
What is the green house gas effect?
The gases in the earths atmosphere are being trapped in the earth and causes an increase in temperature
