Denudation Flashcards
Two types of weathering?
- Mechanical
- Chemical
Three types of erosion?
- Moving ice
- Moving water
- Moving wind
How does freeze-thaw action work?
- Water seeps into the crack
- When the temperature goes below freezing the water freezes and expands putting pressure on the rock.
- The rock becomes weak and a piece of the rock breaks off. The rock is broken into small pieces called scree
How does carbonation occur?
As rain forms it takes in carbon dioxide. The rainwater mixes with the carbon dioxide to form a weak carbonic acid. This acid has a huge effect on limestone.
What is an example of a karst landscape?
Burren Co Clare
What are the blocks of limestone in a limestone pavement called?

What are the grooves in a limestone pavement called?

What are swallow holes?
A river that begins in a non-limestone area that disappears underground when it reaches a limestone surface.
What are stalagmites?
A build up of pure limestone called calcite that builds up on the ground
What is a stalactite?
A build up of pure limestone called calcite that hangs from the ceiling
