The Archaeologist Flashcards
Why did you no location?
Archaeologist dig in a location to see if there is anything of interest to them and to see if the whole site is worth excavating or not
What are the stages in a dig?
Stage one: archaeologist miscarried a survey to see if the site is with excavating
Stage two: mistake test changes which is a sample whole dog to see if there’s anything of interest present and whether it’s worth excavating the whole site.
Stage three: remove the top soil using a digger or a pickaxe
Stage four: dig very carefully at the start to make sure you don’t damage anything
stage five: if you find an object, brush it very identically just to move the soil
Stage six: record every artefact you find
Stage seven: artefact into a museum for them to judge
What tools do archaeologists use
Brushes
Shovel
Pickaxes
Sieves
Trowels
Radio carbon dating
All living things contain substance with carbon 14 when they are alive after death the level of carbon 14 and the one tissue begins to chop at a steady rate means that the older of the tissue the less carbon 14 it contains and how little can tell us how old
Geophysical survey
A physical survey is like an x-ray taken of the ground from up in the sky
Pollen Analysis
Pollen analysis is the study of pollen remains to find out what was growing at a site during a particular time period
Stratigraphy
Geography is used today, artefacts and evidence by how deep in the ground they were when they were found
Dendrochronology
Dendrochronology also called treeing is a method of dating that uses unique growth patterns of tree rings as a guide
Conservation
Conservation is when historic objects are protected and preserved so they do not decay
What problems could be faced during a dig
There could be evidence on the side that be lost forever
You could damage an artefact
