In a monastery
Define round tower
A bell tower a safe place where people and treasure were kept when the monastery came under attack
What was a refectory
A place where monks ate food
What was a scriptorium used for
A scriptorium was a room where manuscripts were written in by hand
What is an Oratory
A church made of wood/stone where monks had mass/prayer
What was in a manuscript
They contained the gospels and plasms from the bible, Lives of saints, Celtic Myths and sagas. They were written by hand usually on sheepskin (Parchment) or vellum (Calfskin). The most famous one is the book of kells
What was metalwork
Irish monks were very skilled crafts men and made things such as chalices, brooches, bells, cups and belts.The Armagh Chalice is an example of chalices made using these skills
What are high - crosses
A high cross is a free sanding stone which show scenes for the bible on the wall for example Adam and Eve on the Crucifixion. One of the most beautiful high crosses in Ireland are they Clonmacnoise
