The Ankle Flashcards
What is the MOI for an inversion ankle sprain?
Single most common injury to the active population.
Lateral ligaments are stressed with sudden inversion, plantarflexion, and internal rotation.
Why are Eversion ankle sprains far less common (5-10% of all sprains) than Inversion sprains?
Bony protection (location of lateral malleolus) and ligament strength decreases likelihood of injury.
What factors may cause someone to be predisposed to an Eversion ankle sprain?
Excessive pronation, hypermobility, or a depressed medial longitudinal arch.
What are the Ottowa Ankle Rules?
- Pain/tenderness along distal 6cm of tip of lateral malleolus
- Pain/tenderness along distal 6cm of tip of medial malleolus
- Pain/tenderness @ base of 5th metatarsal
- Pain/tenderness @ Navicular
- Inability to weight bear immediately after injury and for 4 steps during initial assessment
What is a Syndesmotic Sprain and the MOI’s associated with it?
Injury to the distal Tibiofibular joint via excessive dorsiflexion and/or eversion/external rotation
What is OCD?
Not the mental disorder
Osteochondritis Dissecans. One or several fragments of articular cartilage, w/ underlying subchondral bone partially or completely detach and move freely in the joint space.
Can be acute or chronic. May present with signs of atrophy, pain and effusion.
