- Hollywood industry started to rise after WWI
- Charlie Chaplin was one of the first film stars of this era and silent films were very popular
- In the 1920’s the idea of “stars” became more popular and Los Angeles became famous because of Hollywood. First film studios in this time.
- The 1930’s were the Golden Age of Hollywood with 65% of the US population going to the movies every week. Sound started to be used more often and there were new genres.
- In the 1940’s and 50’s there was the beginning of color film and people started to get TV sets in their own homes.
The Godfather, starring Marlon Brando, is about the Italian mafia in the United States. Won several Academy Awards (Oscars).
Modern Times, starring Charlie Chaplin, is one of the most important silent films in Hollywood history.
The Shining, starring Jack Nicholson and directed by Stanley Kubrick, is a classic horror film.
Jaws, directed by Steven Spielberg, is a 1975 thriller film that was one of the first blockbusters: it made a lot of money for the filmmakers and was very popular among audiences.
Citizen Kane, directed by Orson Welles, is arguably the most well-known and discussed Hollywood film of the early 20th century. It is about a media empire and censorship.
The Wizard of Oz is a musical starring Judy Garland that made innovate use of color in the 1940’s.
