Londinium
Village founded by the Romans in 43 Rebuilt in 61 after Queen Boudicca’s Revolt. 60,000 people lived there
Lundenwic
Near (abandoned) Londinium. Anglo-Saxon rule. Today it is the location of Covent Garden
Vikings
Attacked London and burned it. Alfred the Great (Anglo-Saxon king) made peace with them and became dominant ruler of England.
Westminster Abbey
In the past, called the Church of St Paul. Edward the Confessor supervised its construction in 1042
Westminster Hall
Oldest part of the Palace of Westminster. Building supervised by William II.
The Great Fire of London
- In the previous year, there was the Great Plague. In the fire, large parts of the city completely burned. Started in a bakery on Pudding Lane, and there’s a monument there now. Aristocratic parts (Westminster), ok. Renovation took over 50 years.

The Blitz
German bombardment of London during WWII. Many buildings destroyed. During the renovation, many different architectural styles used, so character of the city changed.
Sir Christopher Wren
English architect who rebuilt 52 churches after the Great Fire of London, including St. Paul’s Cathedral. His overall city design plan was not followed. Also designed The Royal Observatory.
Lord Norman Foster
Modern architect. Designed St. Mary’s Axe (the gherkin) and many other important buildings around the world.
The Royal Observatory
The Tower of London. Castle, prison and home of British crown jewels, founded by William the Conqueror
